On the day that we moved into our new house (which was almost exactly a year ago!), a neighbor came to introduce herself. Her name was Liz and she had a little dog with her named Lacy. Dixie and Lacy sniffed each other for a moment and then began chasing each other around the tree in our front yard. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Lacy is a little Chihuahua mix. When they first met, she and Dixie were almost exactly the same size, but Dixies grown a little by now and is a tad bigger.

Im telling you, these dogs love each other. Sometimes Lacy will just show up at our door, and well let her in and she and Dixie will play. Whenever Dixie is given some freedom, she makes a beeline for Lacys house. Often, they have their door open and Dixie will just let herself in. I believe that Dixie knows the sound of Lizs car as it comes up the street. She watches out the window, and if she sees the family outside she starts going nuts because she knows Lacy is nearby.

The other day, Dixie had been playing over at Lacys house. It was getting late, and I didnt want to impose, so I went over to get her and bring her home. I picked Dixie up and headed out the door, and Lacy followed us out. Her mom called her and called her, but Lacy refused to go back inside; she was determined to come with me and Dixie. After trying for a while, we gave up and Lacy came with us to my house to play.

It has been such a blessing to have Lacys family around. Dixie stayed with them the whole time B was in the hospital, and theyve taken care of her several times when weve gone out of town. Every now and then, when Bs traveling and Dixies going to be in the house all day or something, Ill give Liz a call and she comes and gets her and takes her to her house. One time, we put Dixie in the backyard while we ran some errands. Apparently, Lacy went over to our house and barked outside our gate until Liz came over and got Dixie out so the two of them could play.

Weve been taking care of Lacy all week because her family is out of town. The two dogs play constantly. They chase each other around the house, up and down the stairs, round and round the coffee table. They play tug-of-war with socks they stole from the laundry room. They take turns chewing on the same bone, even though there are enough bones around that they could each have one.

Lacy and Dixie even have matching outfits. For Dixies first birthday, Lacy gave her a red sweatshirt to match Lacys blue one. For Christmas, both of them got pink T-shirts that say Princess on them in silver sparkly letters.

Do you remember that childhood friend you had who you played with every day, who you walked to school with, who you told secrets to, who you claimed as your best friend? Mine moved away when we were in fifth grade, and Ive never found another friend quite like her. Dixie and Lacy are like those precious childhood friends. It just makes me smile.
